Five examples of a captain's report based on grounding, collision, heavy weather, gale damage and rescue of survivors to be used by the teacher/learner during formal report writing exercises. An additional document contains the same five reports with specific maritime terminology highlighted. The learner should research and note the meaning of the highlighted vocabulary and terminology. Teachers might prefer student-centered learning whereby groups of students facilitate the meaning of the terminology to their peers.

Worksheet designed to encourage students to adapt the style and register when writing formal Maritime English. The worksheet can be used with any of the five examples. The instructor acts as facilitator as the students explore the factual, formal & structural aspects of style in this unique form of maritime correspondence. Alternatively the learner may attempt the worksheet on an individual basis. A key is provided.

Gapfill exercise designed to test maritime vocabulary in the context of a captain's report.This gapfill may be used by the teacher as an exercise to be completed in a classroom situation. Students should first study a range of examples of the captain's report and learn associated vocabulary before attempting the gapfill. Alternatively the learner may attempt the gapfill on an individual basis as part of a self-study programme. The key is provided.
